Six Home Improvement Projects for Spring
Spring may not be here just yet, but it’s not too early to start planning your home improvement projects for once the weather turns. With that in mind, here are some projects that you should consider doing to improve the look and feel of your home once the weather warms and the sun starts to shine a little more often.
Painting your home’s exterior in the winter is challenging at best, and honestly something of a waste of your time. Waiting until Spring, however, means you can clean off the dirt, grime, and residue of a season’s worth of snow, sleet, and freezing rain and brighten your home with a fresh coat of paint. Not only will this help improve the look of your home, but it will give you a chance to make sure your siding is in top shape and replace any pieces that have been damage during the bad weather.
Speaking of which, it’s far easier to replace damaged or worn siding in Spring than in Winter. You can change the color of your home, upgrade to a more durable vinyl siding, or even change to a new material entirely, with HardiePlank fiber cement siding and Everlast polymeric cladding both offering the visual appeal of vinyl, but being far more durable over the long run.
Whether they’ve been damaged by inclement weather or they just don’t give you the energy efficiency that you’re hoping for, Spring is the time to swap out your old windows for newer ones since you won’t mind the temporary hole in your home while they’re being installed. “Replacing your home’s windows is one of the better investments in your home you can make,” Greg Paul, owner of Lonestar Siding & Windows, a provider of replacement windows in Richmond, VA said when asked about Spring projects.
“Between more durable products and Energy Star glass, whether you plan to stay in your home or sell it, it’s worth the time and money to replace your windows when you have the opportunity, especially in older homes.”
Add a Deck or Expand the One You Have
If you’re anything like me you enjoy spending time on your deck with family and friends when the weather is nice since you’ve been cooped up inside for months. If your home doesn’t already have a deck, now is the perfect time to have one added to your home, a great spot for entertaining and grilling. If your home does have one and it’s just not big enough, having it expanded can take a space that’s just big enough for a grill and turn it into a spot to entertain friends and family alike.
Nobody likes to have their roof leaking, and if you have severe roofing issues you should absolutely tackle those as soon as possible, not waiting for Spring. However, Spring is a good time to have a roofing expert check your home to make sure there wasn’t any damage during the Winter and to have it repaired or replaced while the weather is nice so that you’ll be ready for any inclement weather in the future.
If a deck isn’t in your home’s future, adding a patio to your home is another home improvement project that’s perfect for Spring as you can have it added and ready to use for entertaining as you move deeper into Spring and Summer. Patios can feature poured cement, brick, or stone depending on what look you’re going for and what is most cost effective for your budget. Consult with your home improvement expert to find out which option is best for you.
